LOAD OF THE WEEK- 13
Dove Loads BP notes Dove Season is just over the horizon. Some five-hundred to eight hundred million of these pesky fliers are tuned up and ready to give shooters lessons in flip-flap, up/down, dip/dive flying. CURMUDGEON has been burning midnight oil choosing his recommended Ding-Dong Dove loads for his fellow showoffs. (He requests to please allow less clever non-reloading shooters to have a few random shots). This page, for the moment, will be plural as in LOAD(S) of the WEEK - because CURMUDGEON feels we need to be fair and balanced for all DOVE gauges. (He did not attempt to push the .410 into the fray). He does point out, for beginners, DOVE LOADS change throughout the day. Early morning opportunities differ greatly from mid-day to late afternoon. And, chunky shot is not required. Doves do not wear armor plate as do their cousin, the barn pigeon, alias the “Rock Dove.” CURMUDGEON has taken semi-distant Doves with only a few pellets of #9 nickel-plated shot. Thus the #7.5 pellet is considered to be heavy-duty shot. Save those loads for windy days. Fat Dove-Days often require a great number of shotshells. Thus the amount of shot in each load may be pared back. The good news is the reloader may load-light! CURMUDGEON prefers swift, lightweight loads for Dove. Note: Some Dove hunters do themselves in by using the same load in the morning, mid-day and afternoon. Doves do indeed change their flying heights and wariness by the clock, thus requiring load modification. *Dawn patrol suggests open choke, think SPREADER or BRUSH wads with small (#9) nickel or copper plated pellets. These birds are often very close! *Mid-day shooting requires “reaching” wads and slightly larger shot (#8) of nickel or copper plated pellets. *Late afternoon involves “sniping” loads. Light, fast moving (#8) nickel or copper plated shot. Why plated shot? You are making GAME loads! GAME indicates the need for lethality. CURMUDGEON would tell you plated shot is far more lethal than non-plated shot. One plus one equals two. Reloaders put together shotshells for RESULTS! So get your full measure. (NOTE: All these loads are six fold-crimped. Components are chosen because we know where the reloader can order these items). For chokes and choking - know thy shotgun (and your shooting circumstance).
