LOAD OF THE WEEK- 01/28/2009

Need a straight-forward, quick-to-put-together 12-gauge 2- ¾” STEEL SHOT load?   Okay try VITAMIN-A and/or VITAMIN-B.   CURMUDGEON will make this remarkably simple.   VITAMIN-A partakes  the OLD STYLE WAA 12-gauge 2 ¾” target hull and VITAMIN-B utilizes the new WAA-HS 12-gauge 2 ¾” target hull.   The reloader should look TWICE and be sure NOT load VITAMIN-B hulls with the VITAMIN-A formula!  

How to tell the difference.  First, LOOK!  The older style (VITAMIN-A) is a two piece (brass-head and plastic tube) hull having a dull surface appearance.  Usually dull red or bright silver.   The newer WAA-HS (VITAMIN-B) is a THREE piece hull.  A brass head, plastic tube plus an interior plastic base cup.  The WAA-HS has LESS internal capacity than the older style WAA hull.   The plastic of the WAA-HS is usually glossy red plastic and DARK gray plastic.  Holding the hulls up to a high-intensity light and seeing the dark shadow of the internal plastic base cup of the WAA-HS is a quick method separating 12-gauge new/old WAA hulls.   So first get your WAA hulls sorted out.  If you do not, you will have loading problems, later.

PROPELLANT: ALLIANT STEEL 35.0 Grains

WAD:  TPS35MM (#3227735) pre-slit  

 Mica dust wad please.

SHOT:  7/8 ounce STEEL shot (382grains).   (NOTE: This is a “TIGHT-FIT” load.) 

BUFFER: None  

FOLD CRIMP: 8-point  

Result:  10500 PSI 1600 FPS

WAD:  TPS35MM (#3227735) pre-slit 

 Mica dust wad please.

SHOT:  7/8 ounce STEEL shot (382grains).   (NOTE: Load is a “JUST-FIT”.)

BUFFER: None  

FOLD CRIMP: 8-point 

Result:  10200 PSI 1545 FPS 

VITAMIN “A & B” loads, by changing the shot size, may used with clay targets, small game, pheasants or ducks.  The number of steel (soft iron) pellets contained in 7/8 oz. in the #3 size is about 134 pellets - or equal to the 1-1/4 #3 pellet count found with soft lead.
