Choosing a steel pellet size for your specific load entails a couple considerations: Larger pellets (more mass) will retain more energy per pellet and at longer range than a smaller pellet. However, larger pellets are fewer in number given the same weight and the result is reduced shot cloud density.

Select a pellet with sufficient lethal energy for your game and shooting range. For upland game, pheasants, and smaller/decoyed ducks, #3, #4 or #5 shot are usually good choices. For pass-shooting ducks and geese, you will want to get into larger sizes: #2, #1, B, BB, T and on up to #F. Of course, this depends upon range, wind conditions and the size of the birds.
