Super Crown Crimp Starter: Large Bore 6-point Our Super Crown Crimp Starter is legendary. We've been making the finest crimp starter in the business for over 35 years. It is the ultimate crimp accessory for your MEC reloader and it solves the problem of getting a good, deep crimp start on new hulls. Why brass? Machined from solid brass, the Super Crown's sharp edges make a deep impression in the hull's crimp folds. Yes, solid brass is an expensive material, but we use brass because that is what commercial loading machines use to create those reliable, deeply-folded crimps. Even unskived and new plastic hulls are easily creased for proper crimps once they go through any MEC crimp starter station equipped with the Super Crown. Easy to install and fits all MEC machines. Comes complete with wingnut hardware and crimp accommodation spring. We machine these quality tools right here in Minnesota. Super Crown crimp starters are available in four variations: Crimping tips: Too sharp? It's possible to cut some types of hull materials, but this is rare. Remember, we manufacture the Super Crown with a sharp edge because that's what puts a deep memory in the crimp. It's easy to dull the edges a bit with a little emery cloth or fine-grit sandpaper. Just be careful when you are doing this. Also Recommended:
Installation Notes: Remove stock plastic crimp starter and mounting bolt. Install Super Crown and adjust depth with locking nuts until proper height is achieved. Make sure that the Super Crown can rotate freely in the machine so that the points self-align with the existing crimp. (Below: Super Crown mounted on a MEC 600JR)

A must have | ||
Wanting to hot rod my beloved MEC Sizemaster I ended up getting the super crown crimp starter. Be it known though, I originally got this only to hot rod my press, thinking to myself how can another crimp starter be better? A crimp starter is just a crimp starter. But went ahead and ordered anyway. When I received, I was pretty impressed by the quality of the machine work on it. I installed it which was effortless and ran a few practice hulls through. While the original crimp starter that comes with your MEC is pretty awesome, to be honest, it doesnt come close to this superb upgrade. The folds in the crimp due to this new starter safely crimps with out cutting anything, but be assured, youll never ever again worry about a crimp not being started just right. I am only reviewing for the 6 point as I got for crimping buck shot loads. However I am going to quickly get an 8 star for turkey loads very soon. This is NOT a waste of money to get.

Must Have | 12/5/2022 | |
This crimper is a Must Have for loading new, un-fired hulls. I keep it on my Mec press all the time no matter if Im loading un-fired hulls or hulls that have been reloaded five or six times. Ill be ordering one for my 20 gauge press.

Excellent Addition to the Mec | 3/1/2022
Good product, makes loading new hulls a breeze. I found that the spring that it came with is basically useless. What I found to be the best for me was just a simple flat washer to set the crimp depth and the factory nut on top. Also highly recommend when you get the tool to take it and run either a nail file or some fairly light sand paper over the edges to break them. They come pretty sharp and in some case will actually cut the hull. Once the edges are broke and dull it performs even better. Some people will tell you that it cant do once fired hulls, which is complete misinformation, I have loaded hundreds of once fired hulls using this crimp starter and it does the same job if not better then your plastic factory starters, now you will have to line the hulls up with the edges to match the original crimp, but other then that youre golden.
Produces perfect crimps on new hulls | 1/5/2021
I already reviewed one of the small crimp starters but I had to get this out for all of them. I have 12 now of BPIs brass crimp starters and if you load new hulls this is the way to produce perfect crimps. Reloading isnt necessary to use these once the plastic has taken a memory set but the initial crimp on a new hull requires a good sharp edge. They do work well on reloading as well if they can rotate freely. I use this particular starter on MEC 10, 12 and 16 gauge Grabber, Sizemaster and Steelmaster presses. On these presses you need to install these with about 3 small washers and double nut them on the top allowing a little free rotational movement. The spring supplied makes it too long to allow a full stroke on these presses. This method works and I have been making perfect crimps for a very long time with this method. I also break the sharp edge of the crimpers with a hard Arkansas stone so the plastic isnt actually cut. I highly recommend these. They are worth the money to produce perfect shells every time. 4 stars only because they dont work with the springs as described.

Super Crown Crimper and Lee Load-All | 1/29/2020
Having a couple of 16ga shotguns, there was a need for an adequate supply of ammo. Had some brand new hulls from BP that I bought years ago. Having only a Lee Load-All to work with, I was able to mount the Super Crown Crimper to the 8 Point crimp stage with a 2 inch brass bolt and a plastic spacer for inside the press. Working fantastic so far making perfect pre-crimps on new hulls! The fix cost me about $1.25.

Super crown crimper 6pt | 10/26/2017
I got this crimper for loading new hulls, because my MEC steelmaster plastic 6pt crimper just didnt seam to get good crimp lines on new hulls. After using this crimper I wouildnt even think of going back to my MEC one. I gave it 4 stars because I do have to adjust it up and down depending on the length of hull im loading, and it does not rotate very well when bringing it down on already crimped hulls. Still a great upgrade for any shotshell reloader!

Great for new hulls, not for used hulls. | 9/22/2016
I bought a bunch of New Hulls, so decided to get this Crimper. It works GREAT for New Hulls... but does not rotate freely enough to fall into existing crimps every time. I had to go back to the Plastic Crimper when reloading used hulls.

Must have for the serious reloader. | 6/27/2015
The Super Crown Crimp Starter is a must have for the serious reloader. The factory crimp starter will work, but the Super Crown is SO much better. For new uncrimped hulls it does a FAR better job getting a nice, crisp crease in the mouth of the hull.

An indispensable tool | 10/3/2014
Bought this on a whim, after I started loading more new hulls. This is a great tool, and makes shells made from new hulls look like factory-made. I would never want to go back to my OEM plastic crimp-starter; this brass beauty has spoiled me.
