Detailed Description

Super Crown Crimp Starter: Small Bore 8-point

Our Super Crown Crimp Starter is legendary. We've been making the finest crimp starter in the business for over 35 years. It is the ultimate crimp accessory for your MEC reloader and it solves the problem of getting a good, deep crimp start on new hulls.

Why brass? Machined from solid brass, the Super Crown's sharp edges make a deep impression in the hull's crimp folds. Yes, solid brass is an expensive material, but we use brass because that is what commercial loading machines use to create those reliable, deeply-folded crimps. Even unskived and new plastic hulls are easily creased for proper crimps once they go through any MEC crimp starter station equipped with the Super Crown. Easy to install and fits all MEC machines. Comes complete with wingnut hardware and crimp accommodation spring.

We machine these quality tools right here in Minnesota.

Super Crown crimp starters are available in four variations:

Crimping tips:
Six-point crimps are mainly used for larger pellets/hunting loads. 10 gauge and 12 gauge 3-1/2" and 3" are almost always six-point crimps. Because there are less folds involved with a 6-point crimp, it is generally easier to crimp hulls with in this manner

Eight-point crimps
are generally for smaller pellets, which is why you always see target loads with 8-point crimps. The Super Crown produces deep and crisp edges, which will aid in closing up gaps. This tool helps to produce tighter, more consistent crimps.

Too sharp? It's possible to cut some types of hull materials, but this is rare. Remember, we manufacture the Super Crown with a sharp edge because that's what puts a deep memory in the crimp. It's easy to dull the edges a bit with a little emery cloth or fine-grit sandpaper. Just be careful when you are doing this.

Installation Notes: Remove stock plastic crimp starter and mounting bolt. Install Super Crown and adjust depth with locking nuts until proper height is achieved. Make sure that the Super Crown can rotate freely in the machine so that the points self-align with the existing crimp. (Below: Super Crown mounted on a MEC 600JR)

A must have
Wanting to hot rod my beloved MEC Sizemaster I ended up getting the super crown crimp starter. Be it known though, I originally got this only to hot rod my press, thinking to myself how can another crimp starter be better? A crimp starter is just a crimp starter. But went ahead and ordered anyway. When I received, I was pretty impressed by the quality of the machine work on it. I installed it which was effortless and ran a few practice hulls through. While the original crimp starter that comes with your MEC is pretty awesome, to be honest, it doesnt come close to this superb upgrade. The folds in the crimp due to this new starter safely crimps with out cutting anything, but be assured, youll never ever again worry about a crimp not being started just right. I am only reviewing for the 6 point as I got for crimping buck shot loads. However I am going to quickly get an 8 star for turkey loads very soon. This is NOT a waste of money to get.

Produces perfect crimps on new hulls 11/17/2020
I am reviewing the small 8 point crimp starter. I use a MEC Grabber to load the 28 gauge and have found the crimps using the original MEC starter to be acceptable but not always perfect. This starter makes perfect clean folds on new small 28 gauge hulls. Reason for 4 stars is I cannot use the springs that are provided and you certainly dont need the progressive kit for the MEC Grabber. I found that I put two or three small brass washers between the crimp starter and the mounting plate then double nut the top of the plate with just enough play to allow the starter to rotate mainly for reloading as new hulls crimp fine with the starter locked in place. I also take a hard Arkansas stone to the edges of all the crimpers to take the sharpness away and prevent any cuts in the plastic. Do be careful of these crimpers as I have had several deep puncture wounds from bumping the points as I reached across the loading bench and accidentally came in contact with the points of the crimper. I do highly recommend these but just be aware of these notes for MEC loaders as the Sizemaster and Grabbers dont follow the path described in the installation and operation part of the description. Great Crimp Starters!
